Neonatology Department

Overview

Formally established in 1996, Neonatology Department developed rapidly. It is currently a national key clinical specialty and a key medical discipline in Zhejiang Province. Currently, there are 2 professors, 6 chief physicians, 5 deputy chief physicians, 15 attending physicians in the department, among whom 13 are doctors, 2 are doctoral tutors, and 1 is master tutor. It has 90 professional nursing staff. At present, there are two wards in the department with a total of more than 200 beds, and about 8,000 neonates are treated annually, including more than 3,000 critically ill neonates.

The inpatient ward of the department has two wards, including isolation rooms for respiratory and digestive tract infection, and rooms equipped with a laminar central air conditioning system for special patients. Advanced devices are equipped in the department, including cardiopulmonary monitor, percutaneous oxygen saturation monitor, neonatal radiation warming rescue table, phototherapy device, air oxygen mixed hood, end-expiratory carbon dioxide monitor, brain function monitoring, non-invasive respiratory support, etc. Advanced technologies and treatment are available, for example, central venous catheterization, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), comprehensive management and treatment of critically preterm infants, blood transfusion therapy for severe jaundice, rapid bacterial DNA diagnostic techniques for newborns, early surgical intervention for congenital malformations of newborns, screening for genetic metabolic diseases, neonatal hearing screening, preterm infant retinal screening, neonatal brain function monitoring, chromosome microarray analysis, high-throughput gene sequencing technology and other diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, etc. Neonatology Department has become a diagnosis and treatment center for neonatal disease that integrates specialist outpatient clinics, wards, and laboratories and a leading neonatal subject training and academic exchange center in China.

Service

As a national key clinical specialty, the service of the Neonatology Department covers infectious diseases such as neonatal pneumonia, enteritis, sepsis, enterovirus infection, suppurative meningitis, common diseases such as hyperbilirubinemia, neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, as well as complicated rare diseases and critical diseases, etc. The annual number of inpatient is about 8,400. A series of advanced technologies are carried out to improve quality of care, for example, central venous catheterization, enteral and parenteral nutrition and TPN to shorten the hospital stay for premature infants; blood exchange therapy to reduce the incidence of bilirubin encephalopathy for severe hyperbilirubinemia; preoperative monitoring of neonatal birth defects (congenital heart disease, esophageal atresia, diaphragmatic hernia, gastrointestinal deformities, airway neoplasms and deformities, etc.); bedside brain function monitoring, heart function monitoring, neonatal bacterial DNA rapid diagnosis technology, neonatal genetic and metabolic disease screening, and neonatal rare disease gene diagnosis technology; and neonatal care, neonatal intellectual training, kangaroo nursing, etc.

Professional Features

(1)Comprehensive management and treatment of critically ill premature infants:

Prevention and treatment of complications and early nutrition support; more than 200 cases of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) every year; screening and treatment of ROP; systematic follow-up visits to early detection of motor retardation and other complications for early intervention to improve quality of life.

(2)Early diagnosis of neonatal infection: Take the lead in carrying out fluorescent quantitative PCR technology to detect bacteria, and promote the early diagnosis and treatment of neonatal sepsis.

(3)Basic and clinical studies on perinatal brain injury: Early diagnosis of neonatal brain injury through clinical evaluation and bedside ultrasound, amplitude integrated EEG monitoring and MRI technology; early detection and diagnosis of congenital genetic metabolic diseases through screening techniques of neonatal genetic and metabolic diseases, comprehensive treatment of perinatal asphyxia, severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, and early diagnosis and treatment of brain injury in preterm infants. In basic research, the mechanism between intrauterine inflammation and perinatal brain injury was explored.

(4)Early surgical intervention for congenital malformations of newborn: An early diagnosis and treatment platform for neonatal severe organ malformations was established with NICU, SICU, pediatric surgery, anesthesiology and cardiopulmonary bypass to standardize surgical treatment of congenital heart diseases, congenital gastrointestinal malformations, and urogenital tract malformations, etc.

Research

The department has conducted academic exchanges with many first-class children's hospitals in the United States for a long time. It ranks at the domestic leading level in terms of clinical and basic research on neonatal respiratory failure and premature infant brain injury. The team members focus on the clinical research of neonatal critical illness and improvement of the survival rate and quality of critically ill infants and explore neonatal pulmonary hypertension, intrauterine inflammation resulting in perinatal brain damage and lung damage, rapid diagnosis of bacterial, enterovirus and other pathogens infections. In recent years, more than 20 national scientific research projects have been approved, including 1 key project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 national science and technology support plan, and more than 10 National Natural Science Foundation projects. Over 50 SCI papers have been published and 4 national patents certified.
