Cardiac Surgery Department was founded in 2014. It was divided from Cardiothoracic Surgery Department founded in 1981. Heart center was established in 2016, which is composed of cardiac surgery, cardiology, CICU, cardiopulmonary bypass/Extracorporeal life support, ultrasound, and anesthesiology departments. Professor Shu Qiang is the director of the center. As an important part of the heart center, cardiac surgery is the Key Discipline of Zhejiang Province and the unit of deputy head of Cardiothoracic Surgery Group, Pediatric Surgery Branch of Chinese Medical Association. More than 1,300 operations are performed every year. A congenital heart disease treatment network platform in Zhejiang Province and Chinese congenital heart disease database were established, which is one of the main member units of the European congenital heart disease database and a member of the Global National Congenital Heart Disease Network. It takes the leading position in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac diseases. There are 15 cardiac specialists in the department, including 4 chief physicians, 6 associate chief physicians, and 5 attendings, half of them with doctoral degree, and the rest with master degree. Many surgeons have been trained at international famous children's hospitals and institutions in the United States, Germany, Canada, etc.

Since the first cardiopulmonary bypass operation was performed in 1981, the number and quality of cardiopulmonary bypass operations have been continuously improved. At present, the total number of cardiopulmonary bypass cardiac surgery in the department is more than 18,000 cases; and more than 1,300 cardiac operations are performed annually with the success rate of 99%. There are more than 800 cases of cardiopulmonary bypass surgeries, with a minimum age of 1 day, a minimum weight of 600g, and a minimum weight of 2.1kg. Surgeries under 1 year old accounts for 75%, neonatal surgery accounts for 10%, and complicated congenital heart disease accounts for about 50%.

In addition to routine operations for congenital heart diseases such as patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect, and ventricular septal defect, it is also the first to carry out various congenital heart disease operations for newborns and infants (including TGA, single ventricle, left ventricular dysplasia syndrome, complete atrioventricular passage, double outlet of right ventricle, complete pulmonary ectopic drainage, permanent arterial trunk, interruption of aortic arch, corrective transposition of large vessels, pulmonary atresia) in Zhejiang Province. The diagnosis and treatment of the center has always been in a leading position in China, and even reached the international advanced level. The department is the first in China to develop and establish a staging treatment strategy of neonatal ventricular septal intact pulmonary artery atresia PDA catheter stent placement to late infants with semi-ventricular correction, and carry out norwood surgery for left heart dysplasia and tracheal stenoplasty with pulmonary artery sling combined with tracheal stenosis. It is the first in the province to carry out the repair of inferior ventricular deficiencies and atrial deficiencies through cardiopulmonary bypass with a right chest minimally invasive incision, and the first in China to carry out ultrasound-guided transthoracic minimally invasive umbrella blockage for the treatment of congenital heart diseases, and the first ultra-invasive incision of the left chest intercostal space to seal the ventricular septal defect. As one of the earliest units in China to develop ECMO technology, it has set a record for the minimum weight of ECMO in Asian neonates.

The department undertakes the teaching tasks of Zhejiang University and the training of doctors in and outside the province. There are 1 professor, 1 doctoral tutor, and 3 master tutors in the department. More than 200 papers have been published, including SCI 100 papers. 3 projects supported by national science and technology , 3 projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 50 projects of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Science and Technology have been conducted with a funding of more than 50 million RMB.

The department has 47 beds, with 18 specialized nurses with excellent nursing skills, of which 88% have a bachelor degree. The nursing team provides high quality of preoperative and postoperative care for patient and families.

As a designated medical institution of foundations like Aiyou Foundation, Yunhui Foundation, the department has assisted hundreds of impoverished congenital heart disease children to apply medical aid for medical treatment. An average of 3 million aid funds is applied from foundations every year.

(1) Surgery of complex congenital heart disease in neonates and infants: including complete transposition of the great arteries, left ventricular dysplasia, single ventricle, complete atrioventricular passage, complete ectopic drainage of pulmonary veins, double outlet of right ventricle, permanent arterial trunk, interruption of aortic arch, corrective transposition of large vessels, pulmonary artery atresia, tricuspid valve deformity and other complex congenital heart disease;

(2) Various types of minimally invasive surgeries: esophageal ultrasound-guided transfemoral vein atrial septal defect occlusion; esophageal ultrasound-guided small incision in the lower sternum or intercostal ultra-minimally invasive incision for ventricular septal defect umbrella closure; transthoracic ultrasound-guided transcatheter arterial catheter occlusion; cardiopulmonary bypass operation through the right chest small incision; arterial catheter ligation through a straight axillary incision or auscultation of a small triangular incision;

(3) Cardiac surgery for low birth weight and premature babies.
