Gastroenterology Department

Overview

As the earliest established pediatric digestive specialty in China, Gastroenterology Department has formed a professional system integrating specialty wards, specialist outpatient clinics, digestive endoscopy room, gastrointestinal motility, digestive laboratories and clinical nutrition management team. There are 8 chief physicians, 7 associate chief physicians, 15 fellow physicians, 12 residents, 1 doctoral supervisor, 2 master supervisors, and 33 specialized nurses in the department with 106 beds. More than 7,000 inpatients are received, and more than 7,000 cases of digestive endoscopy are conducted per year with 106 beds.

The diagnosis and treatment of pediatric digestive system diseases in the department has reached the domestic leading level, and it is the first to carry out new technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric digestive diseases, including gastrointestinal endoscope, digestive tract motility examination, percutaneous liver biopsy, capsule endoscopy, parenteral nutrition, enteral nutrition treatment etc.  A series of standardized diagnosis and treatment (including nutritional treatment) for the digestive system diseases have been developed, and a large number of complicated and critically ill children have been successfully treated.

Service

(1) Outpatient consultation: chronic abdominal pain, gastroesophageal reflux disease, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, acute/chronic diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), functional gastrointestinal disorder, food allergic related gastrointestinal diseases, cholestasis and other liver diseases, acute/ chronic pancreatitis, peritonitis, and other digestive disorders.

(2) Clinical nutrition management: clinical nutritional counseling, evaluation and nutritional therapy for children with intestinal failure, chronic diarrhea, short bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and feeding disorders; home enteral nutrition.

(3) Procedures/ tests performed: We performed different kinds of gastrointestinal endoscopy with or without anesthesia, including esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, intraoperative endoscopy. Advanced endoscopy was also available. For example, double balloon assisted enteroscopy (DBE), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), etc. We had outstanding performance in interventional endoscopy therapy with DBE in pediatric cases, including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of polyps, sclerotherapy for small intestinal hemangiomas, endoscopic stricturotomy /endoscopic balloon dilation with small intestinal strictures, etc. We also did lots of other interventional endoscopy, such as endoscopic polypectomy (including large colon polyps, small intestinal polyps, multiple polyps in GI tract, gastric polyps, cardiac polyps, etc), endoscopic hemostasis (including endoscopic clip therapy, endoscopic variceal ligation and argon plasma coagulation etc.), endoscopic removal of foreign body in digestive tract, endoscopic dilation for esophageal stricture or enteric stenosis, enteric tube placement, esophageal stent insertion and removal, percutaneous endoscopic  gastrostomy (PEG) , peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), endoscopic duodenal diaphragm incision, endoscopic retrograde appendicitis therapy (ERAT). We had an excellent ERCP team and performed a wide range of ERCP related procedures, including endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST), endoscopic papillo-sphincter balloon dilatation(EPBD), endoscopic naso-biliary drainage (ENBD), endoscopic retrograde biliary drainage (ERBD), endoscopic pancreatic sphincterotomy (EPS), endoscopic retrograde pancreatic drainage (ERPD), endoscopic naso-pancreatic drainage (ENPD), pancreatic/ biliary stone extraction, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for biliary and pancreatic stones, etc. We also had 24-hour esophageal pH and impedance measurement, esophageal motility measurement, lower gastrointestinal motility measurement, percutaneous liver biopsy, biofeedback therapy in chronic constipation, fecal microbiota transplantation, etc.

Professional Features

The diagnosis and treatment of pediatric gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary diseases in the department has reached the domestic leading level, and it is the first to carry out new technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric digestive diseases, including gastrointestinal endoscopy, gastrointestinal tract motility examination, percutaneous liver biopsy, nutrition therapy, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) service in pediatric IBD, etc. A series of standardized diagnosis and treatment (including nutritional therapy) for the digestive system diseases have been developed, and a large number of complicated and critically ill children have been successfully treated.

It is leading the formulating of many national guideline/ experts' consensus: expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of corrosive injury of the upper digestive tract in children (2025), expert consensus on clinical application management standards of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in children (2024), quality of care standards in pediatric IBD center (2023) and so on.

Research

The doctors in the department specialize in preventing, diagnosing and treating digestive tract, hepatopancreatobiliary disorders. Therefore, major research programs are aiming at expanding the knowledge of those disease that basically benefits our patients. Our researches focus on: mechanism of pediatric IBD, genetic disorder and pathogenesis in digestive system related rare diseases, clinical research with acute/ chronic pancreatitis, research in pediatric cohort with digestive endoscopy.
