Children’s National Hospital Delegation Visits ZCH
From October 6 to 9, Dr. Kurt Newman, Honorary President and CEO of the Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C, along with Professor Eugene Hwang, chief of the Division of Oncology at Children’s National Hospital and the Chief Infection Control Officer Professor Xiaoyan Song, visited our hospital. They attended the 10th-anniversary event for our Child Life Program and the launch of the Chinese edition of Dr. Newman’s book Healing Children. During their visit, the delegation conducted academic lectures, participated in in-depth discussions on U.S.-China pediatric collaboration, hospital management, and patient care, further strengthening the partnership between the two institutions and contributing valuable insights for pediatric medicine globally.

In the 10th-anniversary event for Child Life Program, Dr. Newman delivered a lecture titled “Leadership Lessons from the Bedside to the Boardroom”. He shared personal stories from his more than 30 years experiences as a pediatric surgeon, reflecting on his journey from a resident doctor to an attending doctor, chief physician, the president and CEO of the Children’s National Hospital, highlighting his vision for advancing pediatric surgical innovation and patient-centered care. His reflections has inspired the audience, and leaving a lasting impact.

Following the lecture, Professor Shu Qiang, Secretary of ZCH, introduced the core themes of Healing Children and emphasized the importance of compassion and emotional support in pediatric care. Professor Shu, alongside Dr. Newman, President Fu Junfen, and former President Du Lizhong, unveiled the Chinese edition of the book, making this pivotal work available to readers in China.

In Experts Discussion session, Professor Shu, President Fu, and the Children's National Hospital Delegation engaged in a meaningful exchange on quality pediatric hospital development. They shared views on medical compassion, talent cultivation, and infection control, hospital management, underscoring the role of humanistic care and emotional support in enhancing healthcare outcomes. Both sides agreed that innovation in management and service optimization is essential for improving care quality, and discussed ways to promote cross-border learning and cooperation in pediatric medicine.

On the afternoon of October 8, Professor Eugene Hwang and Professor Xiaoyan Song presented academic lectures. Professor Hwang shared the latest advancements in pediatric brain tumor treatments, while Song discussed infection control practices of how they achieved the hospital's low infection rates in America. They provided valuable insights for our institution's academic and research development.

During the visit, on October 7, Professor Hwang, accompanied by Dr. Wang Jinhu, the chief of Oncology Surgery Department, exchanged views with our oncology surgery teams on pediatric oncology and explored collaborative opportunities in international clinical trials on anti-cancer medicines.

On October 9, Dr. Newman and the delegation, accompanied by Dr. Wang Jinhu, visited the Moganshan campus, where they were impressed by the smart medical systems, patient-centered design, and hospital facilities.

Children’s National Hospital delegation’s visit deepened our academic exchange with one of the world’s leading pediatric institutions, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation. The delegation and ZCH teams exchanged experiences on pediatric care, exploring ways to advance pediatric medicine through academic innovation and technology.
