Topic: An Inspiring Journey in Adolescent Medicine and Global Friendship

Reflecting on my experience throughout ZJU SDG Global Summer School 2026, when I first applied to this program, I was full of curiosity of a first-year medical student eager to expand my horizons beyond the classroom walls of Hong Kong. Now, looking back on this extraordinary two-week journey, I must say that this program has not only met my expectations but far surpassed them in many ways.

As the name “Global Summer School” suggests, the core of this program is academic enrichment. Being a student from The University of Hong Kong, I was drawn to the “Adolescent Medicine: Good Health and Well-being” module as it aligns with my medical studies well. With strong passion, I attended content-rich and inspiring lectures delivered by esteemed professors from Zhejiang University and its partner universities. Each session brought something new, from cutting-edge technologies like state-of-the-art da Vinci robotic surgery system, to detailed discussions of the HPO/HPT axis and sex hormones related to puberty. After every session, lecturers would kindly ask if there were any questions, ensuring that no student is left with lingering confusion and showing their genuine dedication to our understanding. I want to highlight one specific lecture given by Prof. Wing Kin Wong, as I loved the story-telling method of teaching that made me captivated and engaged throughout the 90- minute session.

I had not anticipated that the Summer School would include a debate session, let alone that I would find myself taking on the role of being a host, which is a responsibility far more demanding than it appears. The two hosts were entrusted with organizing the entire event, from designing the competition procedures, drafting the marking rubrics, to writing the host scripts. Each task required careful thought and considerable preparation, so I was very glad to see the debate unfold with such professionalism and success. Beyond hosting, I also served as the third speaker for my group, delivering rebuttals that sharpened my critical thinking and ability to respond under pressure. Balancing both roles proved challenging, yet it significantly boosted my confidence in public speaking, which is a skill I am certain will serve me well in the future.

Apart from academics, the program offered rich cultural experiences that deepened my appreciation for Chinese heritage. One of the highlights was the visit to the Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hangzhou. Stunning decorations and comprehensive exhibits in the museum gave me extensive knowledge of traditional Chinese medical practices, and I learned some recipes using various Chinese medicine herbs. Moreover, I had the chance to try out calligraphy and got cultural gifts such as fans with fascinating drawings during the Chinese Culture Experience, which was equally memorable. I enjoyed these cultural experiences a lot and made my journey to Hangzhou even more fruitful.

Perhaps the most unexpected gift of this Global Summer School was the friends I made during these two weeks. My fellow classmates came from across the globe, including Malaysia, Thailand, Canada, and much more. I had to switch constantly between Mandarin and English to connect with different classmates, which was slightly challenging at first. Nonetheless, through listening to their stories and learning about their daily lives, I became a better listener and improved my cross-cultural communication skills significantly. Communicating with students from such diverse backgrounds enriched my experience immeasurably, as I gradually build genuine friendships with peers from around the world.

The ZJU SDG Global Summer School 2026 has been a wonderful and inspiring journey. From the excellent support of professors and program stuff, to the unforgettable cultural experiences and the beauty of Hangzhou, every aspect of this program was thoughtfully designed. I would wholeheartedly recommend this program to any student considering similar opportunities, not only medical students: as it offers extensive knowledge, the chance to interact with renowned professors, the joy of making new international friends, and the privilege of experiencing one of China’s most beautiful cities. This summer in Hangzhou has given me memories – and photographs – that I will treasure deeply.
