Established in the early 1960s, the General Surgery Department is currently one of the largest pediatric general surgery specialists in China and the largest training base for pediatric surgery in Zhejiang Province. It is divided into two departments: Binjiang Campus and Hubin Campus, with 5 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, 8 attending physicians, among whom 4 are doctors and 15 are masters. There are three employees serve on the committee members of the Pediatric Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. The department has a professional nursing team, including 9 supervisor nurses, 19 nurse practitioners and 4 nurses. There are specialty wards, including 45 beds in Binjiang Hospital, 2 VIP beds, 42 beds in Hubin Hospital, and 2 VIP beds.

The department has a clinic level in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital choledochal cyst, congenital megacolon, anorectal malformation, portal hypertension, abdominal trauma, acute abdomen in children, abdominal mass, gastrointestinal bleeding, body surface mass, inguinal hernia, etc. Among all the diseases, it has accumulated rich experience in pediatric portal hypertension shunt surgery including REX surgery, Warren surgery, and spleen and kidney shunt surgery. It has completed more than 500 cases of laparoscopic common bile duct cyst surgery, which is one of the most difficult operations in laparoscopic pediatric surgery, becoming one of the largest centers in China to complete the operation.

In addition, the department is also famous in the operation of laparoscopic congenital megacolon radical surgery, laparoscopic giant splenectomy and laparoscopic partial splenectomy, DSA-guided splenic artery embolization, laparoscopic giant spleen “hybrid” surgery and other highly difficult grade 4 operations. It also carries out various other laparoscopic minimally invasive surgeries, including laparoscopic appendectomy, laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery, laparoscopic Meckel's diverticulectomy, and laparoscopic repeated bowel malformation.

Laparoscopic surgery is a feature of the department. As the first to introduce this technology in the country in the 1980s, it has experienced a leap in past years. Currently, the laparoscopic surgeries can be performed in our department includes congenital choledochal cyst, congenital megacolon, giant spleen, hepatosplenic mass, abdominal mass, repeated intestinal deformity, Meckel's diverticulum, acute appendicitis, inguinal hernia and other invasive surgeries, enjoying small surgical scars, fast postoperative recovery, short hospital stay, and mild postoperative pain. Since the establishment of this center, more than 500 cases of laparoscopic common bile duct cystectomy, one of the most difficult laparoscopic operations in children, have been completed.

In addition, the treatment of children's portal hypertension is also a feature of our department, REX surgery, accumulated good experience in Warren surgery, spleen and kidney shunt, intestinal lumen shunt and other shunt operations. In 2017, the Children's Liver Transplantation Center was established in cooperation with the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine to carry out children's liver transplantation surgery. In 2018, it began Da Vinci robotic surgery.
