Pathology Department
Overview
Pathology department is a comprehensive clinical department consisting of pediatric surgical pathology, gastrointestinal biopsy pathology, kidney biopsy pathology, bone marrow pathology, cytopathology, and molecular pathology. More than 20,000 cases are examined each year, with an annual growth rate of 10-15%, including 300 kidney puncture examinations,900 FISH examinations and NGS service. The center has rich experience in the diagnosis of various childhood diseases, especially in the diagnosis of pediatric tumors, gastrointestinal tract and kidney lesions.
The Department of Pathology currently has a staff of 19, including a chief physician, 2 associate chief physician, 3 attending physicians, 2 residents, an associate chief technologist and 10 technologists.
The department currently operates within a modern facility of approximately 1,000 square meters, characterized by an efficient layout and standardized workflows. It is outfitted with a range of advanced imported laboratory equipment, such as a fully automated stainer, an automated FISH staining and analysis system, an automated slide scanner, an automated tissue dehydrator, a paraffin embedding station, a Leica paraffin microtome, a cryostat, and a fully automated immunohistochemistry platform. In 2025, the department further enhanced its operations by implementing comprehensive full-process management of pathological specimens and piloting the digitization of pathological slides.
The department offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic services, including histopathological examination, fine‑needle aspiration cytopathology, rapid intraoperative pathology consultation, complete renal evaluation, special staining, enzyme histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), next‑generation sequencing (NGS), and other advanced techniques.

Professional Features
The center's pathological diagnosis of children's gastrointestinal tract and tumors has a great influence in the country. The center's kidney puncture diagnosis, carried out in 1991, serves patients from both our unit and more than ten general hospitals in the province. In addition, the center is also highly influential in the pathological diagnosis of IBD, skin diseases and muscle biopsies in children.
