Neurology Department

Overview

Neurology Department was founded in 1974, integrating specialty wards, specialist clinics, neuroelectrophysiology rooms and neurology laboratories. There are 5 chief physicians, 4 deputy chief physicians, and 8 attending physicians, including 1 doctoral tutor, and 3 master tutors, 7 of them with doctoral degree.

As the diagnosis and treatment center for pediatric neurological diseases in Zhejiang Province, the department is very experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, central nervous system infectious diseases, neuroimmune diseases, neuromuscular diseases, genetic metabolic diseases, febrile convulsions, migraine, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), transient tic disorder, neuropsychiatric disorders in children, etc. The department is equipped with pediatric video EEG, long-term EEG examination and monitoring, and established a refractory epilepsy management team to develop individualized plans including preoperative assessment, VNS assessment, ACTH or corticosteroid treatment, and ketogenic diet therapy, which greatly improved the treatment efficiency of refractory epilepsy. It has extensive international exchanges and cooperation, constantly tracking the international frontier research progress.

Service

(1) Pediatric epilepsy

(2) Infectious diseases of central nervous system: viral encephalitis, suppurative meningitis, fungal meningitis, parasitic encephalopathy, etc.

(3) Neuroimmune diseases: disseminated encephalomyelitis, multiple sclerosis, etc.

(4) Neuromuscular diseases: myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, myositis, etc.

(5) Genetic metabolic diseases: leukodystrophy, mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, etc.

(6) Febrile convulsions, migraine, cerebral palsy, hypoplasia of the brain, multiple tics, ADHD, children's neuropsychological development disorders caused by various causes, etc.

(7) Rescue of critically ill children with nervous system diseases and complicated diseases.

Professional Features

As the largest pediatric neurology specialty in Zhejiang Province, it has rich experience in the diagnosis and treatment of central nervous system infection, neuromuscular diseases, demyelinating diseases of the nervous system, febrile convulsions, migraine, cerebral palsy, brain hypoplasia, multiple tics and ADHD, and various genetic metabolic diseases such as white matter dystrophy, mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, tuberous sclerosis and other rare diseases. Based on thousands of children with epilepsy treated every year, a special management team was developed to better treat refractory epilepsy and to formulate individualized treatment plan, including preoperative assessment, VNS assessment, ACTH or corticosteroid treatment, and ketogenic diet therapy, which greatly improved the treatment efficiency and non-seizure rate of children with refractory epilepsy. It is equipped with video electroencephalogram, long-term electroencephalogram examination and monitoring for children including newborns. The number of annual examinations in the department reaches 2,000, which has greatly improved the diagnosis rate and treatment efficiency of epilepsy.

Research

In recent years, the department has made important progress in basic research on the pathogenesis of epilepsy, including the transmission of information between neurons, the interaction between neurons and glial cells, the regulation mechanism of information transmission between nerve and muscle junctions, and the functional MRI study of epilepsy encephalopathy. The research team found that different cellular structures of KATP channels in the brain served different functions of the servo brain, the combined expression of different subunits of KATP channels on neuronal dendrites was related to the age dependence of epilepsy, neuronal and astrocyte KATP channels cooperate to complete ion buffering under physiological and pathological conditions in the brain and astrocyte KATP channel regulates conductance between astrocytes through ERK signaling pathway; it also conducted in-depth studies on intrauterine infections and white matter injury and rehabilitation studies, respectively studying CREB, PI3K/Akt, gp130/JAK/STAT signals to regulate hippocampal nerve regeneration after brain white matter injury and rehabilitation of cognitive impairment, the achievements of which have a leading level in related fields; in addition, it has maintained a leading position in traditional advantages such as basic research of central nervous system infection and genetic diagnosis of neurogenetic diseases.

At present, the department has completed 5 National Natural Science Foundation, 1 Zhejiang Outstanding Youth Team Project, and more than 10 provincial projects including Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation. More than 50 academic papers have been published, including more than 24 SCI papers.
