Prof. Constantin Polychronakos was Appointed as the Honorary Professor of ZUCH
On June 20th, Prof. Constantin Polychronakos, an academician of both the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada and the CANADA INstitute of health research, visited our hospital for academic exchange with his fellow researchers. Prof. Fu Junfen, the Executive Vice President of our hospital, appointed him as the honorary professor of our hospital and awarded him the certificate of honor. What's more, the professor was also appointed to the honorary professor of Zhejiang University.
After the appointment ceremony, two lectures were given in our hospital. Prof. Constantin delivered a speech whose theme was “Modern molecular diagnostics of the pediatric disease; application to childhood diabetes”, in which he explained in detail from the aspects of genetic genomics, molecular diagnostic applications of hereditary diseases, and molecular diagnostic techniques such as childhood diabetes. Then, Dr. Qu Huiqi, a bioinformatics scientist at the Center for Applied Genomics from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, gave the other lecture entitled “Precision Medicine Research and Clinical Research on Diabetes”, explaining the general background of precision medicine and the epidemiology of childhood diabetes in the United States. These two speeches were excellent, and the clinicians and researchers benefited a lot from that.
What's more, Dr. Fu made deep communication with Prof. Constantin and his team. Frist of all, Dr. Fu made an introduction about the disciplinary development of our hospital and long-term planning of the National Clinical Research Center for Child Health. Secondly, she made in-depth discussion with them on the cooperation and exchange plan between our hospital and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in personnel exchange, clinical treatment, and scientific research, hoping that in the future, experts from the Applied Genomic Center of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will be invited to participate in the cooperation and jointly develop precision medicine for specialized diseases such as childhood diabetes. In the end, the scientific research team of endocrinology in our hospital, led by Dr. Fu, had discussion with the scientific research team, led by Prof. Constantin, to discuss the incidence and characteristics of monogenic diabetes in children, planning to develop precise diagnostic technology as well as targeted specific treatment solutions suitable for pediatric clinics. That helped our hospital to improve our research and clinical diagnosis and treatment in the field of single gene diabetes and to establish a leading position in diabetes precision medicine research in China, increasing the worldwide influence of it.
