The Seventh Visit of the Speech Therapy Team from Loma Linda University

1. Reunion

On August 20, the Speech Therapy team from Loma Linda University in the United States visited the Children's Hospital Zhejiang University School of Medicine again. The delegation visiting our school includes Prof. Douglas, Prof. Benner and Prof. Sharp, and a team of graduate students from the Department of Speech and Pathology of Loma Linda University. The members of the delegation were: Prof. Terry Douglas, Prof. Janine Benner, Prof. Brian Sharp, and a postgraduate team from the Department of Speech and Pathology.

2. Case discussion

During this visit, the delegation from Loma Linda University had meaningful discussion with the clinical staff in our hospital. Prof. Douglas, director of the Department of Speech and Pathology at the University of Loma Linda, led his team to have in-depth exchanges with the rehabilitation department, child health department, behavioral development department, digestive department and other related departments of our hospital. Besides, focusing on the new progress in the diagnosis and treatment of children with autism, Prof. Janine introduced the application of floor time and key response training technology, and conducted lively discussions on actual cases. In addition, the Department of Rehabilitation of our hospital reported to Professor Sharp the construction of the assessment of dysphagia and rehabilitation of infants in our department with his help. After that, all of them spoke highly of the work of our therapists and doctors with the excellent work they did in the past year. They were amazed by the progress our rehabilitation department has made in the field of autism in recent years, believing that it is one of the fastest-growing teams they have ever seen.

3. Annual Meeting

As a special guest, Prof. Janine attended the 4th Zhejiang Children's Neurodevelopment and Rehabilitation Forum and the salon of “Common Concern” which was jointly host by Hangzhou Disabled Persons' Federation and ZUCH. Attracting so many colleagues to join, a discussion about training experience was taken up among participants.


4. Wenling

On September 5, Speech Therapy's team rushed to Wenling Women's Hospital, a dual sinking twin hospital of our hospital, to provide first-class international services. At the opening ceremony of the International Sino-American Children's Rehabilitation Forum (Wenling Station), Prof. Janine and Prof. Sharp gave special lectures on autism and swallowing and feeding difficulties respectively and answered questions for the parents who came here.

On September 6, Prof. Douglas, Prof. Benner and Prof. Sharp led students to conduct speech therapy rehabilitation seminars for doctors and parents of children in the rehabilitation department at Wenling Women's Hospital, and shared them he rehabilitation concept of them, providing a demonstration on how to play with children with autism and an instruction on how to do home rehabilitation training.

5. Expectation

This time, the Speech Therapy team brought a new concept of medical diagnosis and treatment to our hospital and the parents and children who came to our hospital for treatment. In the future, we will further develop related researches on speech pathology, call for more medical staff to join the ST team to provide more appropriate treatment for more patients, improving the humanities construction of hospital.

The Speech Therapy team will definitely share more advanced ideas with us next year. And the rehabilitation team of our hospital will undoubtedly continue to improve diagnosis and treatment with the international advanced rehabilitation concepts.
